Using Jojoba Oil for Personal Care

How to Apply Jojoba Oil for Personal Care

When comes to using Jojoba Oil* for personal care, our mantra is “a little goes a long way”. We strongly encourage you to use our product a drop at a time until you’re fully familiar with the way it works on your skin. In order to understand the significance of “a little goes a long way” place a small drop of HobaCare Jojoba on the back of your hand and rub it into your skin. Notice that the jojoba spreads easily and absorbs readily. You want the product to fully absorb because that’s how it works best—by softening and conditioning the skin. If you apply too much, it won’t fully absorb into the skin and may feel a bit slick. If this is the case, use less next time. Learn about using The Original Jojoba Company’s oil for personal care below!

*Jojoba is actually a wax ester and not an oil, to learn more about that see our in depth page with information about Jojoba. We refer to it as an oil because it’s what people understand but we prefer to call it an “extract” instead.

Condition Skin

HobaCare Jojoba’s conditioning effects are well known and widely recognized. Manufacturers use it in numerous up-scale personal care products as an ingredient. Pure Jojoba is gentle enough for newborn babies. It soothes, and it restores elasticity to any dry skin area while conditioning and softening the skin.

Toxicological test data from human and animal studies using jojoba, as well as cosmetic formulations containing jojoba, support the conclusion that jojoba is considered safe (Journal of the American College of Toxicology, Volume 11, Number 1, 1992). In the USA, after more than 40 years of public use of cosmetics containing jojoba, there is no evidence of incompatibility with the skin.

For daily conditioning, apply HobaCare all over the body immediately after bathing. Apply it after toweling off, while the skin is still damp, but not wet. Massage the product vigorously into the skin to ensure absorption. Allow the ambient air to dry the skin after application. Apply HobaCare from time to time during the day, especially on elbows, knees, calves, feet or other areas prone to dryness. HobaCare Jojoba soothes and conditions sun- or wind-burned skin.

HobaCare Jojoba has an SPF of only 2 to 4. We do not recommend it for use as a sun screen alternative. Those with darkened or dark skin may wish, however, to use it before applying sunscreen to maintain the skin while in the sun. We recommend applying HobaCare after sun exposure to soothe and maintain the skin. Add a few drops of lavender, carnation, or lemon essential oils and the mixture will fend off pesky insects.

If you love your moisturizing cream and wish to use it, then apply it first, and follow with HobaCare Jojoba.

Jojoba Oil for Psoriasis Relief

HobaCare Jojoba does not cure psoriasis. It does provide soothing relief. Moisten the skin and gently massage HobaCare in.

Condition Scalp and Hair

HobaCare conditions hair and scalp, prevents dryness, and restores manageability. HobaCare and Jojoba Baby relieve babies’ cradle cap. Our jojoba is far more congenial to the hair and scalp than olive or other vegetable and mineral oils. You will often find Jojoba listed on shampoo and conditioner labels as an ingredient.

Manufacturers include jojoba in their formulations because it is safe, stable, and mixes well with other ingredients. It gives their products a silky feeling and is known to be good for the skin. However, such formulations do not include sufficient amounts of jojoba to make a difference to the consumer. Symbolic uses of jojoba as an ingredient belie the logic of using it. Consumers want jojoba to penetrate the hair follicle and scalp. Penetration won’t effectively occur if the consumer is washing hair with it. Penetration is best achieved by applying jojoba directly to the scalp and hair prior to shampooing.

Each of us has unique hair and scalp conditions. Formulated products do not address our individual needs. Use of HobaCare Jojoba eliminates the generalizations of formulated products. You use as much as you need for as long as you need it. You are the formula.

We suggest the following routines using HobaCare Jojoba for scalp and hair:

  • Massage HobaCare into damp scalp and hair, letting it penetrate for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight. Or, massage it into damp hair prior to your workout. After your workout, shampoo. The feel of your hair will tell you whether you wish to lather up once or twice.
  • Warm HobaCare to body temperature. Massage it into damp hair and scalp, towel-wrap hair and scalp, maintaining warmth and permitting HobaCare Jojoba to penetrate prior to shampooing.
  • If you have very thick hair, apply HobaCare after shampooing and toweling dry. Leave it in.
  • During the day, thoroughly rub a drop of two of HobaCare into your hands and then pass your hands through your hair and scalp.

Remember: use reasonable amounts of the product. If you use too much, simply shampoo again. You will quickly discover the combination of amount and saturation time best for you.

To deal with specific hair issues, such as oily hair, dandruff, or bleached or permed hair, please refer to the recipes in the Aromatherapy section of this web site.

Chapped and Cracking Hands

Doctors, dentists, nurses, musicians, carpenters, gardeners — all of them regard HobaCare as a superior skin conditioner, which restores suppleness and prevents dryness.

Give your hands a HobaCare bath at night, just before sleeping. Place a generous amount of HobaCare in a palm and then “wash” your hands with the product, massaging it into the backs of the hands, between the fingers, and into the cuticles. Continue massaging until all of the HobaCare has been absorbed. Put on a pair of cotton gloves and leave them on all night. Repeat the treatment from time to time during the day. Add natural Vitamin E or a healing essential oil, such as lavender, to HobaCare prior to application.

Aromatherapy and HobaCare

HobaCare Jojoba is a “fixative”. While it has a mild, nutty scent of its own, it is totally vulnerable to the scent of its immediate environment. After HobaCare has been in your skin for a minute or two, you will not perceive HobaCare’s scent, only your own. This characteristic makes HobaCare an ideal carrier or base for essential oils and perfumes. Adding essential oils to HobaCare enriches one’s experience with the product, whether it is used to condition skin, scalp and hair, or for massage or any of the other applications described on this website.

We recommend that you mix your own essential oils with a base or carrier of your choice, as opposed to purchasing pre-mixed products. By mixing your own essential oils with HobaCare Jojoba, you will know exactly what you have added to your base and in what strength.

Cuticles

Manicurists routinely use HobaCare Jojoba to condition and soften cuticles and polish fingernails.

If you’re wondering how to use jojoba oil for nails, one may “soak” one’s fingertips in HobaCare Jojoba, a highly indulgent practice, or one may apply HobaCare to the cuticles using a cotton swab. After application, massage the product into the cuticles. For nails, after applying HobaCare buff the nails. (Of course, you can do the same with toenails!) Alternatively, try our aromatherapy nail treatment.

Shaving Face and Legs

You can keep your shaving routine simple with HobaCare Jojoba.

Use warm water on the area you intend to shave and then massage in a few drops of jojoba to help moisturize and lubricate the skin. Use your favorite herbal soap or shave cream with a drop of jojoba mixed in to create some lather and shave.

Rinse razor with hot water after each stroke (and always rinse thoroughly when finished, to elongate your razors function).

Finally, hold a washcloth under the hottest water your hands can take, wring it out well and use it with your hands to cradle the face in heat and to remove any excess soap.

If you use an electric razor, HobaCare makes an ideal after-shave conditioner.

The same ideas apply if you shave other areas of your body. HobaCare conditions and softens, permitting a closer shave. It does not irritate sensitive skin.

To up your shaving game, consider adding your own essential oils for an aromatherapeutic experience! Check out The Original Jojoba Company’s personal care blog for a Gin & Tonic Bread Oil Mix and a Stress Less Beard Oil Mix that can also be used for shaving.
