2024 marks our 30th year providing the highest quality jojoba in the United States and around the world.

It is really hard to believe it’s been that long, though most of us working the company haven’t been with the company the entire time. Some of you have been purchasing HobaCare Jojoba from the very beginning and some of you have just found out about how great our natural scalp and skincare Jojoba oil is.

In 1994, Bob Butler started with a thousand-acre jojoba farm in Arizona. He sold HobaCare Jojoba under the name “The Boston Jojoba Company” at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston. After juggling the farm and selling jojoba became too much (a few crop failures aided in making the decision), Bob moved to solely marketing jojoba instead of growing it.

Initially, Bob marketed jojoba as a natural skincare oil (if you’ve been reading here you know how amazing it is for the skin). After a while, a few massage therapists tried it and told him what an amazing massage medium it was. He started marketing it as a premium single-ingredient massage medium. The result is that a lot of our client base consists of massage therapists. Since jojoba is also a fantastic skin care product, it’s also used by a lot of estheticians, along with many individuals. There are so many uses and benefits of jojoba (see our personal care blog if you’d like to learn more).

Bob and his wife Sally moved the company from Boston to Maine and renamed it “The Jojoba Company” around 2006. In 2012 “Original” was added to the name since another company started using The Jojoba Company as their name. Initially, they filled and labeled bottles by hand in the basement of their house. As the company outgrew that space they built a post and beam barn on their property and moved the office, filling, and shipping operations into that beautiful space. There was a separate warehouse a few miles away that housed large quantities of jojoba, boxes, and other supplies. Drums were brought to the barn and the small bottles were filled at this location.

In the spring of 2018, a cooperative of jojoba farmers purchased the company from Bob & Sally because they wanted to retire. In the spring of 2020, the company was moved to a new facility in Washington, Maine (not too far from the original spot in Waldoboro). This new facility brought the offices & the warehouse under the same roof, which is fantastic! Now all orders (even commercial drum quantities) are shipped from this one location. We are happy to be a vertically integrated company, taking part in every step of the process; from growing & processing our natural scalp and skincare jojoba oil, to filling bottles and shipping it to your doorstep!

For the past 30 years, we've been offering 100% pure jojoba, that's it. We specialize in jojoba and offer the best quality directly from the farms. Questions about jojoba? Call, email, or DM us - we are your Jojoba Experts!

Throughout the years, our labels have changed, usually just minor changes here and there to update the look a bit. Some of you have been using HobaCare Jojoba since the beginning and remember every single transition. We don’t have many photos of the Boston Jojoba Company labels, but we found the fantastic set of slides of product images you saw at the top of this post.

When the company was moved to Maine, the name was changed and thus new labels were in order. These first HobaCare labels were inspired by the Sonoran desert, here’s one of the photos that was used. In the next image, you can see the Sonoran mountain outline in the background towards the top of the bottle on the left with the pump.

After a while, the labels needed another update and the HobaCare name was put forth front & center as a brand, which you can see on the right. The jojoba branch was kept, but it was made smaller and the background of the label was simplified to one color. In 2020, we completely rebranded our 100% pure jojoba oil for hair and skin, and these are the labels we currently use. We really like the new look and fully integrated HobaCare as our brand name to separate us from other brands of jojoba.

Our Current Team Members

BRIAN, our president, has been with the company since 2013. He was originally hired to redesign the website WAY back in 2013 and after he finished with that, Bob & Sally hired him as the general manager. When the farmer’s cooperative purchased the company, he became the president.

Chances are, if you’ve called us, you’ve chatted with HILLARY our customer care liaison who has been working with the company since 2006. Hillary started working for Bob & Sally straight out of high school and has seen many of the transitions along the way (way back from the days of filling bottles with a hand pump in Bob & Sally’s basement).

BILL, our warehouse lead, has been with the company since 2013 and has seen many transitions in the company as well. He enjoys the convenience of having the filling and warehousing operations in the same facility and not having to drive across town whenever a new drum was needed for filling small bottles or whenever a drum customer was picking up a shipment.

SUSY, our marketing & digital content creator, has been with the company since 2014. She manages our social media, writes blog articles, takes most of the photos for our website (even the product images), works with SEO, and steps in to fill in when the warehouse is extra busy or people are out sick.

Our three newest employees are BEN, DAVE, & LAURIE. Ben & Dave both work in the warehouse and have been working for us since the fall of 2023. Laurie (who happens to be Dave’s wife) helps in the office a few mornings a week. We are a small team, usually our team numbers between 4-8 employees (a mix of full & part-time).
