Using jojoba as your oil cleansing medium

You’ve most likely heard of Oil Cleansing, if not, the basic idea is to use oil to clean your face. Many modern skin cleansing products contain detergents and other components that can strip it of its natural oils resulting in dry skin. Oil cleansing uses some type of oil to dissolve the dirt/grime/oil on our skin. Oil breaks down the dirt and grime on our face without stripping it of the natural lipids. One of the most basic principles of chemistry is that “like dissolves like”, thus using oil on your face actually breaks down and dissolves the oil and grime that builds up. The best way to dissolve the sebum on your skin is to use another product in a similar composition (like jojoba, which is the closest product in nature to the sebum your skin produces). If you’ve been wondering if you can oil cleanse with jojoba oil, the answer is yes. Using jojoba as the “oil” for the oil cleansing method will help clean your skin naturally and gently.

The theory is that as the jojoba dissolves the dirty sebum from your skin, it will replace it with clean sebum. This oil cleansing with jojoba oil method can be used by anyone with any skin type. If you research oil cleansing, you will find a wide variety of oils recommended. Jojoba is actually one of the best cleansing mediums because its chemical composition is closest to the sebum that our skin naturally produces. It’s also non-allergenic, which means it’s suitable for those even with very sensitive skin.

I’ve been oil cleansing off and on for quite a few years. Many years ago I used a combination of olive oil and castor oil, but I found my skin wasn’t fond of that mix. The castor oil seemed far too drying for my already dry skin. I tried washing my face with other oils for cleansing here and there but wasn’t impressed with the results and didn’t use oil cleansing frequently until I started using jojoba oil. Now I use jojoba, that’s it, no other oils, no other cleansing agents. My skin has never looked better! Personally, I use jojoba for oil cleansing nightly, once a week I do a deep cleansing by massaging it into my skin for 15 minutes.

Now you’re probably wondering how to use jojoba cleansing oil to wash your face.
  1. Squirt about a quarter size amount of jojoba onto one palm
  2. Using fingertips, massage jojoba on your face in small circular motions. Use more jojoba is necessary to maintain the easy movement of fingertips.
  3. Continue massaging jojoba into the skin for 2-15 minutes using a light touch. I usually do a short cleaning most days and try to deep cleanse for 15 minutes once a week.
  4. Wet washcloth or hand towel with hot water (be careful, you want hot water but not scalding water).
  5. Lay washcloth over face and allow to cool.
  6. Using a damp washcloth, wipe off any excess jojoba.
  7. If skin feels dry, rub a drop of two of jojoba onto the skin.
  8. Enjoy beautifully clean, soft skin!

"If I was on Survivor and could have only one thing, it would be HobaCare Jojoba. I've used it for over a decade and put it on right out of the shower, wash my face with it, scrub my nails with it and use it in my hair. All through cancer treatment, including radiation and reconstruction surgery, I heard comments about how great my skin has handled the treatments. I am convinced it is because of HobaCare Jojoba! And, it is great for massaging scars after surgery too! I buy it by the gallon! Great stuff indeed!

What is oil cleansing?

Oil cleansing is a skincare method that uses natural oils to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum instead of harsh foaming cleansers. Because “like dissolves like,” the oil attracts and lifts away dirt without stripping your skin of its protective barrier. Jojoba oil is especially effective since its composition closely resembles the sebum your skin naturally produces.

For daily use, massaging jojoba oil into your skin for about one to two minutes is usually enough to remove buildup. If you want a deeper treatment, you can extend the massage to 10–15 minutes once or twice a week. The key is consistency—gentle, regular cleansing helps balance the skin over time.

Most people find that oil cleansing once a day is effective, usually in the evening to remove the day’s impurities. If your skin tends to be dry, every other day may be plenty. On the other hand, if you wear heavy makeup or sunscreen, daily cleansing with jojoba oil can keep your skin clear and hydrated.

Oil cleansing can be used on its own as a complete cleansing step, so you don’t need to wash your face with a foaming cleanser afterward. However, if you prefer a double-cleansing routine, use jojoba oil first to break down impurities, then follow with a gentle water-based cleanser.

Oil cleansing isn’t required for everyone, but it’s a gentle and effective option for many skin types. People with dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin often find that jojoba oil cleansing helps restore balance without irritation. If your current cleanser leaves your skin feeling tight or stripped, oil cleansing may be worth trying.

Yes, jojoba oil is safe for daily use on the face. It’s non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores, and it’s suitable for oily, dry, and sensitive skin. Many people even find they can replace multiple products like makeup remover, cleanser, and moisturizer with jojoba oil.”
